Science experiments & projects index
This index, compiled by the staff of the children's division at the Columbus (Ohio) Metropolitan Library, lists 8,400 science experiments and projects in more than 400 books published between 1980 and 1993. It is designed for use by students in grades K-12. It is similar to Science Fair Project Index (Scarecrow, 1992) and Science Experiments Index for Young People (Libraries Unlimited, 1988).
The volume is arranged alphabetically by subjects, most of which are similar to those found in nationally recognized subject heading lists, so finding needed entries is not a problem. Entries include a single-sentence description of the experiment, source title, author, and page number. Cross-references are provided, and more general topics, such as plants and electricity, are subdivided. Bibliographic information on the 400 books is found in the back of the book and includes space for a library to indicate call numbers for those titles it owns. Grade-level designations are not included in the index itself or the bibliography. The lack of this information precludes its use for collection development and hinders teachers and parents from using the book effectively with a particular-age student.
